Risk-Based Safety Management Systems
By carrying out a ‘risk profile’ for an organization, we have helped clients implement a more focused safety management system (SMS). Rather than having a generic approach the system will ensure that the key risks are managed as a priority. We place ‘dynamic’ risk assessment at the heart of the SMS. It is critical that risk assessment is at the centre of the process and that the level of risk and the continuous improvement / monitoring plan are in ‘real time’.

Risk-Based Auditing
Integra acts as an external auditor and verifier to clients, often working with internal audit teams.



Linked to the Risk Based SMS, Risk Based Auditing focuses auditing on the critical issues, not generic processes. It is wrong, in our view, for a management system to be ‘in-place’ if it is not being effective at managing the risks of the organization. Risk Based Auditing involves measurement of the effectiveness of controls, including levels of safe / unsafe behaviour.

Typical auditing processes cover the level of implementation and effectiveness of management systems, level of compliance to best practice safe design and maintenance of plant and equipment, observation of safe behaviour, and finally the use of short safety climate surveys to measure perceptions on safety.



Unannounced Audits
Planned audits are valuable as a comprehensive review. However, one major client uses Integra to assist in unannounced audits. Just turn up one day and get straight out into the plant!

Risk Assessments
We have helped clients as diverse as the world’s biggest soft drinks manufacturing site through to a charity and a football club to complete risk assessments. We would never do risk assessments without substantial input from the clients, but clients find our straightforward approach less complicated and more dynamic than others they might have tried.



Safety Teams
We recommend clients to involve employees in a very structured process. We have many examples of safety teams taking real ownership of continual improvement in their areas. Safety teams establish dynamic risk assessments, risk action plans and inspection / observation systems to maintain control.

We have helped develop the processes and training to enable these teams to work effectively.

Our training style is highly participative. For example during risk assessment training the delegates will conduct assessments in their areas and develop plans for control. We also tailor all training courses to use the systems of the client company. Therefore we will incorporate their risk assessment, incident investigation, inspection checklists, permits, etc into our training materials.

Software
We have worked with Gemsoft7 (www.gemsoft7.com) and other developers to generate bespoke applications including a web-based permit to work management system.

Behaviour Based Safety
We have built into clients’ Risk Based Safety Management Systems all of the best practice tools for the promotion of the safe behaviour critical to success in injury prevention.

As associate consultants, we have led the roll-out at major clients, of ‘Culture Based Safety’ from John Ormond Management Consultants Ltd (www.john-ormond.co.uk).

John has developed an approach that challenges the culture of a client through workshops with all levels of management and with work teams. The aim is to gain commitment to change. The programme is supported by training significant numbers of managers and other staff in the SUSA™ technique. This is a process for systematic observation of Safe and UnSafe Acts followed by discussion with the purpose of:

  • recognising and reinforcing safe behaviours
  • prompting people to evaluate their own risks
  • finding and acting upon the root causes of unsafe behaviour
